Cents out to repeat
Monday July 24, 2006
By Rob Ross Times-Journal staff It’s a simple goal for the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials at this year’s Canadian men’s senior fastball championship. “I think we have a team that can repeat as champs,” coach Tom Edie said. “The goal is to repeat, but it isn’t going to be easy. A few other teams have loaded up.” The Evergreen Centennials, managed by Bill Horne and coached by Edie and Dan Denniss, head west to Prince George, B.C. for Softball Canada national tournament Aug. 27 to Sept. 3. First St. Thomas will play a best-of-three series against the Jarvis Merchants at the OASA provincial championship Aug. 6-8 at the Tarry Complex. All but two players return from last year’s roster including ace pitcher Frank Cox, speedy centrefielder Ryan Wolfe, slick moving shortstop Chris Jones and the O’Brien brothers, Sean and Rob. From St. Thomas are Tyler Lessard, Chris Wismer, Mark Coleman and Kevin Lynch. Also back are first baseman Brian Harvey, third baseman Craig Crawford and pitcher Trevor Wardell. Three players are new to the roster but well known throughout the fastball circles, one familiar to St. Thomas Jr. B hockey fans as well. Jim Midgley, currently a coach with the Acadia University men’s hockey team, played one season with the Stars on a line with Joe Thornton and Brian Willsie. The Townsend, Ont. native played with Nova Scotia Mulgrave Eagles at last year’s Canadian championships. Tim McCumber, a teammate of Midgley’s with Mulgrave and Dale Levy, who played for the Kitchener Hallman Twins will be with St. Thomas. McCumber plays first base and pitches while Levy possesses one of the best outfield arms in the country. Both are on Canada’s national team roster with Wolfe, Cox and the O’Brien’s. “That’ll be the first time the entire Centennials roster that is going to defend will be together,” Edie said. “Some of the guys have been playing with the Centennials at a few tournaments.” St. Thomas had an average showing at four tournaments this year posting an overall record of 8-6. “The bottom line was we didn’t hit the ball,” Edie said. “Maybe there was a lack of focus or maybe the hunger may or may not have been there. “When the rest of the boys get together and we strap them on for the provincials, that’s when the gear will switch.”

Prince George Citizen newspaper
For the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials, winning the 2005 Canadian senior men's fastpitch championship could not have been more satisfying.
When the Centennials arrive in Prince George for this year's event, Aug. 27 to Sept. 3 at Spruce City Stadium, they'll be doing everything possible to repeat their feat.
"We're pretty proud of the fact that we're defending champions," said St. Thomas coach Tom Edie. "The majority of the squad is back together, and our goal -- obviously -- is to come out and win. It doesn't look like it's going to be an easy row to hoe, looking at some of the preliminary rosters. It's a smaller field (eight teams, compared to 13 last year) but I think a stronger field, really.
"We're hoping to come out and put on a good show, and, with any luck, we'll be there on Sunday (in the final)."
Last year's national tournament was held in St. Thomas, so the Centennials experienced the thrill of winning it in front of their hometown supporters. Their victory was made even more special because it came at a time when emotions of the team members were running high.
"(Manager) Bill Horne, his daughter was very sick, and one of our players, Chris Payne, his parents about a month before had been in a very serious car accident," Edie said. "There were a lot of things going on and I think that really helped our team gel, because it was really our first time together.
"Chris's parents both survived (the accident) and, at that time, there were some thoughts that maybe the mother wouldn't. And the father actually made it to the championship game (a 7-1 St. Thomas win over Newfoundland). At Christmas time, Bill's daughter succumbed to brain cancer."
The national title was the first for a team from St. Thomas.
"It was very special," Edie said. "There was quite a number of guys that had never won it before. The guys from the St. Thomas area were the ones that had never won before, so to win in front of the home crowd was just extra special. And with the tragedies that were happening outside of the team, there were a lot of tears at the end of it."
As they try to defend their title this year, the Centennials will have a few new faces in their lineup, guys who should make major contributions during the Centennials' quest for a repeat. First, there's Tim Macumber, a Halifax-based pitcher and first baseman who is on Team Canada's 35-player list. As well, talented outfielder Dale Levy of Kitchener has signed on with St. Thomas.
"He's one of the top outfielders in the senior circuit in our country right now," Edie said of Levy, who is also on Team Canada's radar screen. "He has a very strong arm and is a big hitter."
Finally, the Centennials have added Jim Midgly, another Halifax product, to their roster. Players not back in uniform for the 2006 nationals are outfielder Troy Rick, first baseman Jeff Seed and outfielder Mike Taylor.
In the final analysis, Edie said the Centennials may be "a little bit stronger" this year.
"The gelling part of it doesn't necessarily need to happen now because it has already happened," he said. "We're probably a little stronger. It just really depends on how our pitching staff is. I think offensively we're stronger for sure."
Other St. Thomas pitchers for nationals will be Frank Cox, the winning hurler in last year's championship final against Newfoundland, Rob O'Brien and Trevor Wardell.
"All three of them have a little bit different pitching styles," Edie said. "Frank is a hard thrower -- basically that's it, he's a very hard thrower. Rob O'Brien is a fairly hard thrower with a decent changeup. Trevor, he's a working-man's guy. He throws dropballs and changeups and gets plenty of ground balls. The guys like to play behind him. He's a veteran and he's crafty."
The St. Thomas offence will start with Ryan Wolfe, yet another Centennial on Team Canada's player list.
"He's our leadoff man, and I think as he goes, we go," Edie said. "He's an excellent catalyst -- very speedy and has some power."
O'Brien and Levy also carry potent sticks.
"Us, as coaches, don't feel as though we have a weak spot top to bottom," Edie said.
In the most recent set of national fastball rankings, St. Thomas was listed as No. 1, just ahead of the Vancouver Grey Sox. The Prince George Black Bears, the host team for the national tournament, were ranked No. 6.

Action from Sunday’s opening day at the Canadian Senior Men’s Fastpitch Championship, which runs through Sunday at Spruce City Stadium:
St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials 6 Stony Plain Twiliters 0
The defending champions rushed out in a strong way, scoring all their runs via the long ball and riding the complete-game performance of hurler Frank Cox in a shutout victory over the Alberta representative.
Outfielder Daly Levy of St. Thomas fired the first shot, a solo blast to right centre. Shortstop Chris Jones took a Darrell Tilley pitch over the fence in centre field for a three-run improvement, and first baseman Tim Macumber added a two-run shot to complete the scoring.
St. Thomas (1-0) will face Newfoundland (11:30 a.m.) and Jarvis (6 p.m.) today

Tom Edie takes a heavy tumble walking down the street today...stepped through a grate and went down heavy....unscaved though...tremendous falling ability.
