Two local teams lose fastball challenge semifinals
Thursday May 25, 2006
By Times-Journal Staff JARVIS, Ont. -- Two St. Thomas teams suffered similar fates at the Jarvis Fastball Challenge over the weekend. The Storm, out of the St. Thomas and District Fastball League, lost 7-1 to Cayuga in the Intermediate division semifinals Monday after winning both pool games. Ryan Cummings tossed a one hitter in a 10-0, five-inning mercy of Fisherville. Brent Crocker led the Storm offence with six RBIs. Crocker and Tom Edie hit back-to-back home runs. Scott Bate had his first career fastball home run and Aaron Gould had two hits as the Storm beat Caledonia 6-2. Cummings picked up the win. Crocker suffered the loss in the semifinal. The Storm had a different look from their league roster as seven players were with the St. Thomas Centennials in the senior division. A player could be only with one team. Kevin Lynch, Tyler Lessard, Troy Rick, Chris Wismer, Mark Coleman, Chris Payne, Brian Harvey and pitcher Trevor Wardell were the only players present from the Centennials’ roster that won the Canadian Senior title last year in St. Thomas. Darren Zack was also on the rubber for the Centennials. The Centennials left the tournament at the same time, however, losing 4-3 in extra innings to Midland, Mich., in a senior semifinal. Lessard smacked a home run. St. Thomas went 1-2 in the round robin (beating Oshweken Redmen, losing to Heflin Gremlins from New York and Jarvis Merchants) before eliminating the Merchants in the quarter-finals. Payne and Lessard had home runs during pool play. The Kitchener Hallman Twins, ranked No. 3 in the ISC (International Softball Congress) ratings, defeated Midland 9-2 in the Senior final.
Team Canada camp Five members of the Centennials were at Canada’s national team selection camp in Kitchener over the weekend. Outfielder Ryan Wolfe and catcher Sean O’Brien hit home runs on Day 1 of the camp Saturday. Pitchers Frank Cox and Rob O’Brien were also in attendance. Thirty of Canada’s best softball athletes took part in two inter-squad games in bids to be selected to the National Team for the Pan American Championships in Hermosillo, Mexico, Sept. 29 to Oct. 9.

Re: Rankings « Reply #56 on Yesterday at 11:26pm »
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Too all the posters saying that St. Thomas should not be allowed to go because they are not in the travel league. As a member of that team, some of us have other commitments like families that already sacrifice every other weekend for us to play as well as 2 nights a week in our home league. The travel league was not an option! We would not be able to get enough players for half the games. We have trouble enough during local league games. 6-8 years ago when we were in the league, most of us were either single or kidless. So the 4:00 to 2:00 am trips were ok. Now that is impossible and unrealistic. We did not roll the dice. We had no intentions of playing in the travel league. Therefore, we went in the qualifier to see what would happen. It is not our fault if the travel league folds. Many other regions do not have travel leagues. Why is it our problem? If you want a classy, fun, hardworking, good team at the worlds, we will go. If you do not want us because it may wreck a league. Ok. Just do not ever say that we rolled the dice!
Let's hire a new PR guy and fire this one.......
