St. Thomas celebrates repeat fastball title
Wed, September 6, 2006
By ERIC BENDER, FREE PRESS SPORTS REPORTER In years to come, it will be the blast from the past, but it's still fresh as the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials bask as repeat Canadian senior men's fastball champions.
Left-fielder Dale Levy hit a walkoff home run in the ninth inning as the St. Thomas squad captured the title for the second straight year in Prince George, B.C., on Saturday.
What a blast it was.
"I'd say it went 350 feet," St. Thomas manager Bill Horne said. "It cleared the fence by 100 feet, it cleared the beer tent fence and it cleared the practice field fence. There was no doubt about it."
Levy, a pickup from Waterloo, was one of three players added from last year's squad that won the championship at home. Tim Macumber and Steve Mullay from Newfoundland, who played junior in Scarborough this year, were the others, replacing Jeff Seed, Mike Taylor and Troy Rick.
Horne believes St. Thomas is the first team to go through the tournament undefeated -- 10-0. At last year's tournament, they lost two games.
Horne said Owen Sound has also won back-to-back Canadian championships, but he doesn't know of any team winning three straight.
The Evergreen Centennials will try, but will have to go to to St. John's, Nfld., to do it.
"We need to get nine guys back to go without qualifying," Horne said. "That shouldn't be a problem. If we have to qualify, then we'll do it that way. Either way, we'll try it again."
It cost almost $30,000 to attend the Canadians in Prince George.
"We're not a big-budget team like some. We'll have to raise some money. Somehow with our two major sponsors, we manage to get through," Horne said.
Winning might be tougher next year. Horne said brothers Sean O'Brien, a catcher, and Robbie O'Brien, a pitcher and designated hitter, both living in the Kitchener area but from Newfoundland, are committed to play for their native province.
"That means we'll probably lose Frank (Cox), too," Horne said. Cox, from Owen Sound, is a premier fastball pitcher and was key for St. Thomas last week.
