Tough month ahead for Cents St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials face challenge at this weekend’s senior fastball provincial tourney
Thursday August 02, 2007
By Rob Ross Times-Journal Staff Not only do the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials have the target on their backs, they’ll need to overcome a second challenge of a large turnover. This year’s defence of the Canadian senior men’s fastball title will likely be the toughest challenge yet when the Centennials head to Newfoundland later this month for the 2007 tournament. The two-time defending Canadian champions are at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association men’s fastball Senior and Intermediate championships this weekend at the Douglas J. Tarry Sports Complex. St. Thomas is joined by the Jarvis Merchants and Kitchener Hallman Twins in the Senior division, the qualifier for Canadians although this year all three already have berths at the national event. The tournament starts with three games Friday at 7 p.m. Tickets are $7 for all Friday games and $10 for each of Saturday and Sunday. “We’re going to be underdogs,” said coach Tom Edie. “Kitchener and Jarvis both want to win this thing, but we’ve been able to play both teams pretty tight over the years. Even though there’s only three teams (in senior) it will be exciting.” Several key contributors to the Centennials’ success over the past two years are no longer with the team.
Chris Jones, one of the game’s premier shortstops and first baseman Brian Harvey both retired during the off season. Meanwhile ace pitcher Frank Cox and the O’Brien brothers, Rob and Sean, are playing for Newfoundland. Ryan Wolfe, one of the world’s top centrefielders is taking a pass on this year’s tournament and third baseman/catcher Craig Crawford isn’t back. “We had to step back and re-evaluate,” said Edie, guiding the Centennials with manager Bill Horne and co-coach Dan Denniss. “We think we’ve added some of the right pieces to the puzzle to make a run at it again. We know it will be a long row to hoe. Those guys were pretty key to our championship run.” A core group does return. Outfielder Mark Coleman, infielder Tyler Lessard, utility players Chris Wismer and Kevin Lynch, plus pitchers Trevor Wardell and Dan Beecroft remain from the 2005 title team. All but Wardell are members of the St. Thomas Storm, two-time playoff champions of the St. Thomas and District Major Fastball League. New to the Cents are outfielder/catcher Brian Roote, from Stratford, first baseman Ted Kosciesza, catcher Pat Humphreys and designated player Dave Fowler, all from Oshawa and Aaron Gould, the third baseman for the St. Thomas Storm. Joining the Centennials for the Canadians only are Darren Box, one of the hottest hitters this year playing with the SolCal Bombers from California and Rob Schweyer of Farm Tavern, out of Madison, Wisconsin. St. Thomas has a 6-6 record after three tournaments played so far this year. “Early in the season we didn’t play very well defensively nor did we hit very well,” said Edie. “Although we were 1-3 at (Allentown two weeks ago), we had three very good games.” The Centennials, ranked 21st in the world, faced three of the top six team, the Orillia Riversharks, Kitchener Hallman Twins and New York Patzies. The Riversharks feature Wolfe, Cox and the O’Briens along with Tim Macumber and Mike Taylor from the 2005 roster. Dale Levy who hit the walk-off game-winning home run to win the Canadian title a year ago for St. Thomas, now plays for Kitchener. It’s a busy August for the Centennials, who will attend the International Softball Congress World tournament in Kitchener.

I guess the Cents got rid of Payne as well. Did he retire or did he just pack it in?

He was cut!! Who needs a captain anyway!! Just because he leads the team in hitting and is one of the nicest guys in fastpitch doesn't mean crap.
Another conspicuous absence is that of Mark Crawford. He was a member of the '05 team but hasn't been seen since.

Thanks for keeping me in the loop. I thought that Mark Crawford got left out in Shedden one night a couple years ago and still hasn't made his way home.
