Elmira wins provincial amateur softball championship

MERLIN, Ont. -- For the second year in a row the Fingal Jrs. fell a game short of qualifying for the Canadian championships.
Fingal was eliminated in their sixth game blanked 5-0 by Oshawa at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association Junior Elimination tournament July 7-9.
The top three teams qualify for Canadians and Fingal placed fourth.
Pitcher Marty Humphries held Fingal to four hits, two by both Steve French and Garrett Baker, in the sixth-inning mercy.
Baker took the loss allowing six runs on seven hits and three walks.
“Bridesmaids again,” manager Jim Ford said. “We lost our first game and we had to win four games Saturday and four games Sunday (to win title). We won four Saturday and then we laid an egg.”
We were tired and they (Oshawa) hit the ball well.”
Elmira won the provincial championship upending the defending champs from Scarborough. Oshawa finished third losing to Scarborough in a semifinal.
“From going there (Canadians) in 2004 to being one game out last year and again this year it is frustrating,” said Ford.
A tournament opening 7-4 loss to the eventual champs from Elmira sent Fingal to the loser’s side of the bracket resulting in more games required to make it to the final.
“That was a critical loss for us,” Ford said. “We lost our focus for an inning and we couldn’t get the momentum back.”
Fingal led 3-2 after four innings before Elmira tied it in the fifth and scored three runs in the sixth.
Baker, Scott Reeder and Mark Johnson all had RBI doubles.
Fingal rebounded with a 9-4 win over Scarborough Royals scoring runs in five of seven innings.
Matt Lynch went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Johnson, Andy Richardson, James Shaftsmaa and Brad Wolfe each had RBIs.
Mark Ritchie picked up the win allowing four runs and seven hits while striking out five.
Trailing 2-0 Fingal batted through the order to come back and beat Chepstow 9-4.
The game’s turning point was Johnson’s two-run homer in the fifth inning.
Lynch went 3-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs while Dave Cook had two hits and two RBIs. French slapped out three hits and Johnson and Richardson had two apiece.
Pitcher Ryan Cook recorded the win allowing three runs and five hits.
Baker tossed a complete-game six-hitter with no walks and five strikeouts as Fingal dumped Port Perry 5-3.
Fingal scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning for a 5-1 lead.
Johnson and Baker both hit RBI doubles.
Fingal avenged a loss that knocked them out of last year’s tournament downing the Breslau Badgers 9-1.
Johnson smacked a grand slam for the game’s highlight.
Baker was again the winning pitcher allowing one run on six hits over five innings.
