Storm leaving league in their wake Posted By Rob Ross, TIMES-JOURNAL STAFF Updated 3 hours ago
Unless something drastic occurs the St. Thomas Storm is on their way to reclaiming the pennant in the St. Thomas and District Fastball League.
After winning four in a row the Storm finished behind the Shedden Mission last year. It didn't however stop the Storm from winning their third consecutive champion-ship.
Currently at 16-2 and six games ahead of second place Blenheim the Storm would have to be swallowed up in a giant sink hole during practice one night to not finish in first place.
Only six games remain on the schedule for the Storm entering the all-star game here Tuesday.
The key strength for the Storm are pitchers Ryan Cummings, Dan Beecroft and Tane Richardson, who hails from New Zealand.
"No doubt about it our pitching staff is really strong. No staff in the league can match our three pitchers," Storm manager Tom Edie said. "Tane has been a bonus and he brings a great bat."
Cummings leads the league with a 1.14 earned-run average and has struck out over 70 batters.
With over 100 runs scored the Storm tend to light up the scoreboard scoring opposition pitching.
Richardson and Mark Coleman each have a league leading 17 RBIs.
The league knows Coleman, Tyler Lessard and Chris Payne well, but this year Jamie Peat has delivered big numbers.
"We've had lots of RBI's from Tane, Coley and Payne and Peaty has been lightning the league on fire, hitting over .500," said Edie. "This is his best year. He's putting the ball in play and getting some bounces."

Peat was about a career .250 hitter before this season, but now sits third in the league with a .514 average.
As well dedication to the team continues to keep the Storm a tight cell.
"We have a pretty good commitment. We have almost every guy out for every game," said Edie. "We feel every game that we hav a chance to win."

heard StT lost tonight. Only had 10 guys there. Maybe Coach Edie spoke too soon when he told the TJ that his team committment was good.

Storm clinches first place
Thanks to a sweep of a double-header Tuesday, the St. Thomas Storm clinched the club's sixth pennant this decade in the St. Thomas and District Fastball League.
St. Thomas doubled up on the Morpeth Magic 4-2 before blanking Blenheim Home Run Restaurant 7-0 in five innings, to improve to 18-3 with three games remaining in the season.
The Storm regains the pennant lost last year when Shedden placed first, snapping the Storm's consecutive streak of five years.
"Obviously that was a goal going into the season, to get that pennant back," Storm player-manager Tom Edie said. "It's now one down and one to go. The regular season title is nice, but the focus is always the playoffs."
Close to two-thirds of the players have been together since the Storm, then based out of Union, won their first pennant in 2001.
The nucleus of the Storm that's been wreaking havoc on the league for eight seasons is Edie, Dan Beecroft, Tyler Lessard, Chris Wismer, Kevin Lynch, Aaron Gould, Chris Payne, Jamie Peat and Dan Denniss.
Ryan Cummings, Dusty Brown, Mark Coleman and Troy Rick, were on board by 2004. Tane Richardson, Brent Crocker, Pete Babcock and John Coleman joined this season.
"A constant for us is we've always had strong pitching and we pride ourselves on strong defence. Not all teams have the luxury of calling on a second starter," said Edie. "We haven't always been the highest scoring team. We don't always crush the ball, but we seem to get timely runs when we need them."
Beecroft pitched a complete-game, 12-strikeout game against Morpeth and chipped in with two hits.
Gould had a home run and a double for two RBIs for the Storm, while Crocker hit a solo home run.
Kevin Vink drove in both runs for Morpeth with pitcher Darren Devine taking the loss.
Game 2 was over almost before it started as Richardson smashed a grand slam with nobody out in the bottom of the first inning for a 4-0 lead. He finished with five RBIs.
He also pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out 11 batters.
Wismer added a single and a triple and scored two runs.
As pennant winner the Storm will have a bye into the second round of the playoffs.
The first round, likely to begin mid-August, is best-of-three game affairs.
The Storm finishes the regular season with a double-header Thursday, Aug. 7, in Alvinston.
Several of the Storm players will be with the St. Thomas Evergreen Centennials this weekend at the senior men's provincial championships in Cobourg.
That will be a best-of-three affair with the Jarvis Gamblers.
Both teams already have spots at the Canadian championships Aug. 24 - Sept. 1 in Saskatoon, Sask.
