I'd like to state some facts regarding the circumstances surrounding the final standings: Firstly, it should be known that it was made clear to all teams two and a half weeks prior to Aug. 3rd that this would be the last day for games to be played regardless of whether they impacted standings. This was not a directive from me but rather, a reminder of what the teams had set as a mandate for getting playoffs started and finished earlier than in the past few years. This was discussed in great detail prior to the start of the season and I told all the teams then, that there was a possibility that there would be problems getting games in as we had developed a very aggressive schedule. At no time did any team question the cut off date for games. Teams assumed that the Storm would win 1 more game and clinch. Even on Aug. 1st, I was told that Alvinston didn't really care about first place and weren't interested in travelling to Morpeth one more time. They felt that they had accomplished their goal and would be going to Hillsburg for the ToC.
Secondly, the make up game in question was from May 11 and in the constitution it states that BOTH teams shall agree on a reschedule date at the time of postponement OR the next time that team plays there it will be a doubleheader. Too often the teams just assume that there will be a DH next time. It is for these situations that the terminology is in the constitution. If the document is followed all the time and not just when convenient, situations like this will be avoided. Yes, it's the home team's responsibility to book the park but both teams are to agree on the date. Thirdly, when the rain out happened last Thursday, there was sympathy expressed on my part towards Alvinston and an attempt to reschedule was made eventhough the deadline had passed. This fact seems to be forgotten! Morpeth told me that they had no intention to replay the game as they were abiding by the league mandate. This is when I decided that it would be in my and the league's best interest if I deferred the matter to the two vice-presidents, citing a perceived conflict of interest. Keeping in mind that the elims were on the weekend and TWO playoff games were to be scheduled this week we thought that an impromptu meeting Saturday between the two would resolve the issue and if the make up game was to be played it could go Monday or Tuesday and then if needed the first place game could go the next night. This would allow for at least one playoff game to happen this week. The two executive members discussed the matter and decided that with the elims, ISC's, NAFA and the Canadians all causing disruptions to playoffs that it was better to stick by the original decision that ALL THE TEAMS MADE and begin playoffs immediately. This was the rationale for the decision and as league president, I'm proud of the fact that our executive made a decision, albeit a hard one, and stuck with it. I have been on this executive for 13 years and too many times we have changed something or altered a rule midflight just to appease a team that feels the rule didn't work for them at the time.
I do sympathize with Alvinston. I respect their team and actually like most of the guys. To imply that I or the league has a prejudice towards this team is rediculous. This decision was made with the WHOLE league in mind. There are players that will not play a game for 2-3 weeks because of the other tournies and be expected to step into a playoff game and perform. If this decision hadn't been made it would have possibly been even longer.
Therefore, I hope we can all move on and get down to playing this game that we all love. This is the best time of the year for a fastpitch player and to be throwing negatives out there and slamming each other is rather counterproductive. Let's settle it on the field.
I hope I have cleared some things up. I know it doesn't change the way Alvinston feels. I can't help that. I don't plan on debating this anymore on this forum so those of you who are planning on picking it apart - save it. I have stated the truth!

I disagree , Morpeth was the home team, why would this not have been rescheduled along time ago, this rainout is from May 11th. Also since these 2 teams did play again June 9th in Morpeth why was that game not a DH? I thought the league had a time frame as to when games need to be rescheduled, or the next game IS to be a DH? If anything this game should be replayed and a tiebreaker should be played. I would not want to win the Reg Season Crown that way by losing my last 3 games and backing into it. Unfortuate thing was this game was gonna be played and they had rain again but there is no excuse to why Morpeth did not find diamond time and reschedule this along time ago as it is their responsibility. Ben must not been around I guess. The league scheduler should have stepped in and made the June 9th game a DH. Gets better he plays for Alvinston so he should have known better. It sucks to see the season end like that, but to blame the 2 teams altogether is not fair the league execs and especially the scheduler should share the blame. This is a re-ocurring issue year after year and there are rules and fines in place , they should be used maybe teams would get it together and get these games made up.. Ok...so I just thought I would quote a previous statement by a poster in this thread. If you read President Tom's post above, you will see that rescheduling games is not my responsibility. I simply make the schedule, try to maintain the schedule, and then am notified (supposed to be) by team representatives or managers when a game is resheduled. If one is resheduled, I then make the appropriate change in the league schedule. However, it is not my responsibility, and because I play for Alvinston doesn't mean that I should have known better. I'd rather you be a bit more informed, before bashing me. Andy Triest

Andy, no matter what you do there will be idiots who come on here with nothing better to do but slam someone. There are many things I'd like to say about a lot of issues but you can't always give an honest opinion. Keep doing what you are doing! Those who know appreciate it!!

OK. So Alvinston wants to make up a rain out, and it didn't happen. Not fair? Well... life isn't fair sometimes and that is the way it is. We can't control the weather, this is something that happens, I don't think it is something that should cause teams and individuals to feud about or cause any resentment between GROWN MEN. This league is ran better than any other that I have seen, so don't put on those guys in the executive. Shedden had a rain out game to make up with Morpeth and it didn't get done, and I don't here them making an issue out of it, nor do I hear anyone else making an issue out of it. But all of a sudden you have a chance at first and a by in the playoffs and it is front page news that this rain out game didn't get made up. It is a game that got rained on twice, times up.. the standing are the standings and that is it. so lets leave it at that.

It was a hard fought battle last night. Todd threw very well and Belmont showed signs of completing the upset. I hand it to Blenheim for getting past it and beating us with their bats, as well they capitalized on our mistakes. The good thing was Belmont got into a rhythm and got players in the right position by the end of the year, and hey there is always next year. Congrats to Blenheim, good luck and Belmont hold your heads up you did better that likely anyone figured we would!
