Cents coaches to play for Storm OASA tourney at Tarry Complex will have senior, intermediate groupings
Tuesday July 25, 2006
By Rob Ross Times-Journal staff Tom Edie and Dan Denniss will have a busy weekend at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association (OASA) elimination tournament. Not only are both coaches with the St. Thomas Centennials at the senior level, Edie and Denniss will be in the lineup and coaching the St. Thomas Storm in the intermediate division at the OASA provincial championships Aug. 6-8 at the Douglas J. Tarry Sports Complex. “It’s going to busy for three days for me,” said Edie, who also wears a third hat with the organizing committee. “I’ll be there all weekend. I’m looking forward to it though. It’s a labour of love.” The Storm will have a different look from the St. Thomas District Fastball League with starters Tyler Lessard, Chris Wismer, Mark Coleman, Brian Harvey, Chris Payne and Kevin Lynch all with the Centennials. That’s leaves veteran utility man Troy Rick and pitcher Dan Beecroft to lead a younger Storm squad into the tournament. Both were with the Centennials last year, but Rick is unable to attend this year’s Canadian championships while Beecroft has a spot on the roster if he’s available. Earning bigger roles for the Storm will be Dave Ferguson, Jamie Peat, Dusty Brown, Aaron Gould, Scott Bate and pitcher Ryan Cummings. The Storm picked up six players for the provincial championships including Jeff McPherson and pitcher Mike Joseph of the Shedden Mission of the SDFL. Also joining the team are catcher Dave Sowden, utility man Rory Miller and infielders Norm Logan and Calvin Miller off the Oshwegen club. The key strength of the Storm certainly comes from the rubber. “With Mike, Ryan and Beecroft, three of the top pitchers in our league, I think we’re solid with our staff,” Edie said. “We’re looking forward to the challenge. Being at home I know the guys are looking forward to putting together something.” Joining the Storm at the eliminations from the SDFL are the Glencoe, Alvinston, Morpeth and Blenheim. Due to only two teams vying for the senior title many senior players have signed on for the weekend to play for intermediate teams. Alvinston meets Aurora featuring ace pitcher Todd Martin in the opening round. The Storm face Bridgeport, featuring brothers Todd and Cory Winkworth from the Belmont Blacksox of the SDFL.

I predict that coach Edie will make all the correct decisions. He seems to have a knack for that kind of thing. Many options for him and DD.
